Welcome back to Smartt Takes! And the second most wonderful time of the year…the Iowa Caucus! If it feels like the Iowa Caucus snuck up on us, well, it kind of did. Traditionally, the caucus has been held during the first week of February. However, with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) schedule changes, everything is happening a few weeks earlier.

Let’s break it down. Also, in case it’s helpful, here’s a quick primer on the Iowa caucus.

Republicans

There are 6 Republicans left in the primary race:

  • Ron DeSantis

  • Nikki Haley

  • Asa Hutchison

  • Vivek Ramaswamy

  • Donald Trump

  • Ryan Binkley — who has not previously met any sort of threshold of consideration by the Republican National Committee (RNC) but will be an option on tonight’s ballot.
